King Of Bramble Bay Regatta

Congratulations to John Jackson and Harry Cuneo on winning the first 3 races of the Summer Series at the last race meeting. Results of those races can be found here.

This weekend, SYC are holding the King of Bramble Bay Regatta, a 2 day event. The event has a long course on Saturday which takes in Woody Point, Nudgee Beach and covers most of Bramble Bay. Day 2 is “normal” round the cans, windward/leeward or Triangle races. We are looking forward to hosting 505 sailors from south of the river and will happily host all off the beach and trailerable craft.

First warning signal is scheduled for 11:00 Saturday and 12:00 on Sunday.

Summer Series races 1, 2 and 3

Following a big weekend hosting the Flying Fifteen State Championships, sailing is on again at SYC this coming Sunday 26th.

The first 3 races of the Summer Series are scheduled with the warning signal for the first race scheduled for 11:30am. High tide is 2.19m at 12:04. All boats welcome.

Day 2 delivered far more manageable conditions, with lighter north‑easterly breezes gradually building through the morning. The Race Committee successfully completed three races, providing the fleet with competitive and enjoyable sailing after a challenging opening day.
One team stood out across the board—Chris and Mark from Lake Macquarie Yacht Club, who sailed consistently and impressively to claim victory in all races over the series. Congratulations on a dominant performance.
It was a pleasure to welcome sailors back to Sandgate and to reconnect with so many familiar faces. We look forward to seeing you all again soon.
Looking ahead: Next year’s State Championships will be hosted by Tin Can Bay Yacht Club Inc.

Flying Fifteen State Championships – Day 1

Day 1 of the Flying Fifteen QLD Champs—what a ride! The NE’ers are back and they didn’t hold back, with gusts up to 25kts and a rolling swell that felt like someone had the fire hose on full blast. Some crews played it safe without spinnakers, others hung on tight.
The RO called it after one race (triangle‑sausage‑triangle) and wisely raised N over A. The “scorecard” for the day:
Gooseneck: 1
Tiller: 1
Forestay: 1
MOB: 1
VHF radio: 1
Rescue boat: 1
Every boat, crew, and bit of gear made it safely back to the club. Race 3 kicks off tomorrow at 10:00!

Day 1 Results

Merv Anderson Sprint Series – results!

The Merv Anderson Sprint Series kicked off the summer sailing season in spectacular fashion! Sunday delivered six adrenaline-packed races on a short windward/leeward course, with a lively 12–15kt NE breeze and playful downwind swell that kept crews grinning from ear to ear.

Shoutout to the Young Guns! Luca and Harry crushed it on the Toppers — starting every race and only one capsize in challenging conditions. That’s serious grit! Sisters Tanesha and Tanvi also impressed, crewing up front and gaining valuable race experience throughout the day.

Battle at the Top – Neil and Darryl aboard Ffunnily Enuff held strong, but David and Lindsay on Think Big kept the pressure on all the way to the finish. It was close-quarters racing at its finest!

Next Up: Flying Fifteen QLD Championships – 11–12 October! We’re excited to host sailors from Tin Can Bay, Darwin, and Lake Macquarie for another thrilling regatta.

ANZAC Trophy results

On Sunday SYC held the last races for the 2024/25 Summer sailing season, competing for the ANZAC Memorial Trophy. The weather was fruity with a strong breeze from the SE and swell from the east. 2 races were conducted under the control of “Big” John Mitchell and Triangle-Sausage-Triangle courses were prescribed. With a stronger 15-18 knot breeze these triangles made up for a lack of this course being used this year with the crews surfing and planing on the reaches and downwinds, a great way to finish the season. Chris and Lindsay on SNAffU managed to secure 2 wins, Neil and Graeme on Ffunnily Enuff 2 second places, and Dean and young Harry Cuneo scored 2 third places.
The ANZAC Memorial Trophy was found at the back of the club’s trophy cabinet, was dusted off and put back into seasons calendar. It will be great to see this trophy at the front of the cabinet once again.

Full results can be found here

Anzac Memorial Trophy

Sandgate Yacht Club is holding the last race of the 23/24 Summer Sailing Season this Sunday 13th April.

The event is the ANZAC Memorial Trophy starting at 1000hrs. It’s an early start so competitors need to be rigged and at the Starting Line on time to take full advantage of the High Tide of 2.15m at 0935hr.

Ted Rice Shield – results

SYC raced the Ted Rice Shield on Sunday in a south-westerly breeze which was odd for this time of year. It was a light and hot breeze and being an offshore breeze had a lot of variance in direction. There was also a lot of tidal movement probably added to the amount of water running out of the creeks and river.
The Contenders struggled in the light breezes, but Neil and Graeme enjoyed conditions that they excel in. The breeze started to fil in and by the end of the day there was enough to suit Greg and Chris, but unfortunately still not enough for the Contenders to get up and boogey.

Well done to Harry and Tanisha in some very difficult conditions.

Next race is 13 April for the return of the Anzac Memorial trophy after many many years.

Ted Rice Trophy

Racing is on at Sandgate again this Sunday – the Ted Rice Trophy (postponed from 19th January).

High tide of 2.48m at 1002hrs so First Warning Signal at 1100hrs.

All welcome for this the second last race of the 23/24 Summer Racing Calendar.

Excelsior Cup

The races for Excelsior Cup were sailed yesterday in a light and shifty ENE’ly. It was great to see some new faces and 2 Contenders out on the water.

The results were announced as “provisional” as there were a few problems encountered while formulating the results. After careful review the final results are now available. There are some slight changes to what was announced yesterday – chiefly that the handicapper DID NOT actually win the event! Congratulations to Neil Lestor and Graeme Dobson for winning the event after sailing well all day.

Congratulations to Harry Cuneo. The youngest skipper in the fleet at 13 and a commendable mid-fleet finish.

Full results can be found here.

Christmas fun race

Tomorrow SYC has the final event for 2024 – Christmas fun race around fixed marks in the bay, then drinks and nibbles in the clubhouse afterwards. Racing will start off the pontoon in the creek at 12:00 noon. High tide 2:19pm @2.0m, predicted 10 knot NE and no rain! All welcome.

It’s the final race outing for 2024 as next week (22nd) we will be holding a Fun Race for the Christmas break-up.

High tide on Sunday of 2.63m will be at 0923hrs. All Boat Fleet.

Verdon Shield

Racing at Sandgate tomorrow Sunday 17th for the Verdon Shield.

A series of races for All Boats over a set course. First warning signal is scheduled for 11;30am.

High tide of 2.63m at 1022hrs.

Assistance on the Start/Rescue Boat always welcomed – just turn up to the Club around 1030hrs to offer your help.

Club Championship racing

Champagne sailing conditions today for the first 3 races in the 2024/25 Club Championship series. The NE breeze built throughout the day from about 8 knots to finish in about 15 knots.

Congratulations to Graham and Sara for winning all 3 races.

Next event is the Verdon Shield 17 November.

King of Bramble Bay and Merv Anderson Sprints

Last race weekend the club held the King of Bramble Bay Regatta, a 2 day event taking in all of Bramble Bay.
Race 1 was a marathon starting and finishing at the Shorncliffe Pier held in a firm 12-15k NNE’ly. After the start, boats sailed the long windward to Otter Rock on the southern shore of Woody Point. As usual, everyone was worried about over standing the mark which is always hard to find. Next was a broad reach to Nudgee Beach. The tracks of the lead boats were less of a straight line than you would expect! Then a sail back to the Fisheries mark and a tight 2-sail reach to the finish.
On day 2 there were 2 windward/leeward races held around set marks in light conditions.
Congratulations to Graham and Steven in Gripple Nipper for winning the event this year, just edging out Neil and Graeme in Ffunnily Enuff.
This weekend the club are running the Merv Anderson Sprint Series. This is a 1 day series of short races that provides a focus on getting good starts, fleet management and tight racing. First warning signal is scheduled for 11:30.

Full results can be found here.
Winners - Gripple Nipper

Winter Series + Warwick Frostbite

Race day 3 of the Winter Series is happening this Sunday at SYC. First warning signal is scheduled for 13:30hrs. If you are able to assist on the start and rescue boats, your assistance will be appreciated.
The last race day of the Winter Series we had 6 boats rig up for racing including a 505 and a single handed Topaz. Unfortunately 1 boat boat didn’t make it off the ramp. 2 Windward races were conducted in variable westerly conditions. The first race of the day was more stable than the second – boats only 30 metres separated were experiencing large differences in breeze.
Last week, our friends at Warwick Sailing Club held the annual Frostbite Regatta. Reports are that it was cold……. VERY cold! Saturday morning there was ice on tents and cars! The fleet was made up of Flying Fifteens, Wetas, Hobies, RL24 and a Status and brought sailors from Tin Can Bay, Brisbane and the Darling Downs. Peter Shaw and young Jonah Sayer from Tin Can Bay YC won the event.
Some feedback from Graham Lee – “It was a wonderful weekend with a great group of people, brilliant camping site and facilities. Two of the Warwick Club members played fabulous Sea shanty music for us well into Saturday evening! Just, when going, double your quota of winter clothing and bedding!!”

Is that snow on those hills?!!

Winter Series event day 2

Winter Series Race day 2 on this Sunday at SYC. With high tide of 1.82m not until 1542hrs, the first Warning Signal is scheduled for 1330hrs.

Our next outing will be over the weekend 20-21 July when we conduct the Frostbite Regatta in conjunction with Warwick Sailing Club (see NOR and Entry Forms on syc.org.au).

Warwick Sailing Club Frostbite Regatta

Once again SYC are proud to be supporting Warwick Sailing Club’s Frostbite Regatta.

This year the regatta is being held on the same weekend as the Warwick Jumpers and Jazz Festival 20-21 July. Sailing will take place on Leslie Dam once the ice has been broken and the Race Officers deem that hypothermia is a certain bet.

Last year there were Flying Fifteens, trailer sailers, Weta trimarans and more varieties of craft taking part.
